28th September is international safe abortion day, an event usually marked by pro-choice rallies to reflect the struggle of women and girls worldwide in pursuit of safe, legal abortions. This year, as expected, it was not possible to hold such demonstrations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this has not stopped us from marking such an important day in our calendar.
A socially distanced pro-choice demonstration was held in front of the parliament in Valletta where activists consumed fake abortion pills to highlight the absurdity of criminalising what is a very simple procedure in medical terms.
Our special thanks also goes to Break the Taboo Malta, Dear Decision Markers, Young Progressive Beings, and LovinMalta for producing this moving video of narrated, real abortion stories from Malta to mark this special occasion.
We look forward to commemorating safe abortion day in 2021, hopefully under more normal circumstances, and hopefully also under a more humane abortion law.
