Doctors for Life come out in favour of the prosecution of women who have abortions

Updated: Jun 4, 2023

In a statement released on Saturday 3rd June 2023 and published by the Independent, Doctors for Life welcomed the recent judgement that condemned a woman in Malta for having abortion. Doctors for Life said, "we have also laws in place that protect a child that is much younger and still in the womb. The courts have sent a clear signal that such protection should be upheld." What makes it more disturbing is that the woman convicted had mental health issues, had a young child, was in abusive relationship and had signs of injury on her body, and was reported to the police by her partner.

Doctors for Life, a Maltese NGO of doctors that oppose the guidance on abortion of medical authorities such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), have now taken their position a step further from just opposing the provision of abortion, and have come out in favour of the prosecution of women who have abortions. This harsh stance is completely opposed to the guidance of the WHO and RCOG, that state that abortion should be decriminalised and women should be able to access the procedure legally and safely.

Even more concerning is how the doctors who are members of this NGO would respond if they discover a woman has had an abortion. Now that is exposed that this NGO is in favour of the prosecution of women who had abortions, it may be the case that their members will report women to the police for prosecution. The public should be aware of their position and be very careful when dealing with doctors who are members of this NGO.
