What is Doctors for Choice (Malta)?

We are a nonprofit organisation of medical professionals from various specialities who want to be a voice in favour of reproductive rights in Malta. All of us either work in Malta or are working or training abroad but have strong links to the country.

How many doctors are you?

When we first launched Doctors for Choice (Malta) on 2nd May 2019 we were a group of 25 doctors. In a few weeks we have doubled our membership to 50 doctors and counting.

What is the mission of Doctors for Choice (Malta)?

Our mission is to advocate for comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare that is safe, equitable and accessible.

What are the aims of Doctors for Choice (Malta)?

We have four main aims:

  1. To advocate for comprehensive sexual and reproductive education in Malta
  2. To advocate for comprehensive, freely accessible contraception in Malta
  3. To advocate for decriminalisation of abortion in Malta
  4. To advocate for the provision of safe, equitable and accessible abortion services in Malta

Are you an organisation?

Doctors for Choice (Malta) is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation with its own statute and governance, and it is registered in Malta under the number VO/1816. Doctors for Choice (Malta) is also a partner organisation with Global Doctors for Choice (GDC).

Are you motivated by profit?

No, we are conducting our campaign because we believe in safe, equitable, and legal access to reproductive services including abortion. We are following what is advocated by several international medical organisations, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). Our statute is also clear that Doctors for Choice (Malta) is a non-profit organisation.

No, and our statute prohibits us from doing so.

Who can join Doctors for Choice (Malta)?

We allow any medical doctor and medical student who shares our values and is connected to Malta to join our organisation and contribute. Doctors for Choice (Malta) has three types of membership as described in its statue: Regular Membership - open to any medical doctor who shares our values and is connected to Malta. Associate Membership (non voting) - open to any medical student in Malta who wishes to join our organisation. Honorary Membership - the Board may admit any other person as an honorary member at their discretion. No fees are currently due for any type of membership.
